Popular Peckham provides hub for London's first-time buyers

The South London district of Peckham has proven to be a hit with first-time buyers in recent years. Characterised by its trendy aesthetic, independent day and night-time haunts, and superb travel connections, it’s little wonder so many debut home-buyers are flocking to the area. For 29-year-old Client Relationship Manager, Kirsty these are just some of the reasons why she chose to secure her first home at Notting Hill Genesis’, Peckham Place, with the support of London Help to Buy.

Kirsty begins: “I moved into my apartment at Peckham Place in August 2020. Moving at this time gave me something to look forward to; particularly given the change in my personal circumstances with regard to work. I work in the music industry, which has been hit really hard by the pandemic, and ultimately my role within the business had to change. This was quite unsettling at the time, so having a new home on the horizon was an exciting distraction.”

Discussing her previous living arrangements, Kirsty explains: “When the pandemic hit, I moved back home with my parents for a few months to save money, however, previous to this I rented a two bedroom flat in Brockley with a friend, and then a tenant from Spare Room. Having rented throughout my twenties in Brockley, Balham, and Clapham, I worked out that I had spent over £50,000 on rent alone; which, frankly, is extortionate. I was tired of throwing money away, and I felt like summer 2020 was the perfect time to take my first steps onto the property ladder.”

Kirsty recalls why she chose Peckham Place: “Back in 2019, I frequently drove past the scheme whilst it was under construction, and for some reason, I got a warm, familiar feeling every time I saw it. When the time came for me to buy a property, I viewed developments in Greenwich, Clapham, Streatham and here at Peckham Place. From the moment I walked into Peckham Place, I knew it was the one for me. I must have had a premonition that I would live here one day!”

“I purchased a one-bedroom apartment on the sixth floor at Peckham Place using Help to Buy. The apartment feels incredibly bright and airy – partly because of the floor-to-ceiling height windows, but also due to the open plan living arrangements. I think the sense of space and light are my favourite aspects of the property, in addition to the abundance of storage here. The kitchen/living area is huge - which will be great when I’m allowed to entertain guests again. I also love the balcony! It’s like a little sun trap, so I’m looking forward to sitting outside in the summer, looking over south east London.”

She continues: “There’s a real sense of community at Peckham Place. When I moved in, I was immediately added to the scheme’s Whatsapp group, and on my very first day here, I was invited to drinks in the communal area. I think this is a testament to the development itself, and the type of people who live here – of which there are many!”

Explaining her decision to settle in Peckham, Kirsty explains: “I’ve always loved Peckham. It has so much character, edge, culture, and history. There are lots of trendy independent bars and restaurants, which I think is really important for young people today – hence the thriving first-time-buyer market here. Peckham Rye is also nearby, which has been invaluable throughout the pandemic, and my commute to work is also really easy from Peckham. I think the same can be said for other local residents who are in their twenties and thirties. It’s definitely a hub for people in my age group.”

Talking about how she purchased her home using Help to Buy, Kirsty says: “I had quite a sizable deposit, and used London Help to Buy to secure my apartment. I had looked at using Shared Ownership, but it made more financial sense for me to go down the Help to Buy route.”

“As a novice home-purchaser, I didn’t know what to expect, but I was so impressed with how smooth the process was. I have a great relationship with the sales and marketing team at Peckham Place; they were really hands on, patient and helpful throughout my whole purchasing journey. It was the kind of customer service would hope for as a first-time buyer.”
