HOW OUR HOMES CAN HELP SUPPORT OUR HEALTH
Every year in the UK, the month of April brings us an opportunity to highlight the importance of wellbeing and mental health through Stress Awareness Month. Jim Munson, our Head of Marketing shares the ways in which stress effects our everyday lives, especially in the home, and how during the UK lockdown we can all look at finding ways to help combat those rising feelings of anxiety.
It can start at the earliest part of our day, perhaps waking up late, getting children ready for school, dealing with a difficult morning commute or worrying about what’s going on in your life or in the wider world – whatever the stresses are, as busy human beings we often forget to take time for ourselves. The value of a good night’s sleep, having a safe and secure home and the opportunity to be able to get outdoors, even for a short period of time, has for a long time been under-valued by many of us.
Our homes should offer us a tranquil and stress-free sanctuary, and whilst many aren’t in a position to make structural changes to their home, everyone has the capacity to alter the cleanliness, organisation and furniture layout in order to maximise the available space, outlook and functionality of each room. At Notting Hill Genesis we understand how important it is to provide affordable homes that ensure many of these mood enhancing elements are catered to. Where possible we have implemented carefully planned designs and layouts that deliver homes that offer inspiring and comfortable surroundings, this is especially important in London where size and space can be limiting.
Now more than ever, the nationwide lockdown has made us all appreciate other key factors that can directly influence our mood. With London being one of the greenest major cities on earth, and Councils being urged to keep park spaces open, the ability to access the outdoors, whether that’s your own garden, a balcony, a communal space or a local park is something we always consider when planning our developments. Having somewhere to escape to, the need for natural daylight, taking a breath of fresh air and the option to exercise is incredibly important for our mental well-being.
